The Cooper River Bridge Run began in April 1978 with about 1,000 runners. The course is 10k from Mt Pleasant into downtown Charleston. The closing of the reversible lane of the Silas Pearlman Bridge required legislation from the SC government for the race to take place. The final race over this bridge was on April 2, 2005. In 2006 for the ‘first Bridge Run’ over the new Arthur J Ravanel Bridge, record numbers of runners and walkers signed up to be part of the historic run. This resulted in a record number of combined total entrants: 45,497. The 2009 race had 37,617 runners and walkers registered.Each year there is a poster design contest. This year’s winner, Jessica Crouch, is from Charleston. The inspiration for her entry came from a photograph she took of a beautiful Charleston sunset. By combining her photography with design, she wanted to create a piece using bright colors to celebrate the excitement and energy of the Cooper River Bridge Run. The winning design is also used on the t-shirts given to the runners.
